My two cents

Compelling new stats on the growth and penetration of social and mobile media since last year - stats to note:

  • Daily access of blogs or other social networks is up 58%
  • Access to these blogs and networks via mobile apps is up 125%
  • Twitter and LinkedIn have grown faster than Facebook at rates of +75% and +69% (versus 50% for Facebook - though, most of us were already on mobile Facebook this time last year)

In terms of activities we’re actually doing on our mobile devices -

  • 80% more of us are reading blogs of those we know directly
  • 53% more of us are reading blogs by brands or companies we follow
  • But only 28% more of us are clicking online ads and banners

This is interesting for a few reasons —

  1. The descrease in ad sales experienced by Microsoft, Yahoo, AOL, and Google is real and likely unreversable — consumers simply aren’t engaged by static ads that do nothing to create a 2-way dialog or provide targeted information.
  2. Human nature still likes to ”talk” and even if we aren’t doing it over the phone anymore, we aredoing it online - particularly with people we know and trust. Thankfully, basic human nature hasn’t changed that much.
  3. Brands who leverage social channels effectively are likey seeing positive results - the more consumers ‘talk’ to you online, the more consideration and engagement is created, and the stronger the purchase funnel becomes. More $$ is what we all want right now.

Really great stats and shows significant promise for advertising, branding, and commerce in the digital age.
