Google's Own Burning Platform Memo

Google Developer’s midnight blog post (meant to be ‘internal’ but was posted ‘external’)

This is an unfortunate misstep on the part of one Google developer — and while it won’t change much in the grander scheme of things, it does reveal some vulnerabilities inside Google that at least a few people are worried about. Google’s internal damage control engine is likely all over this, and there are probably a good handful of Facebook’ers getting a good laugh out of it ….

Tired out, middle of night, frustrated developers are an interesting bunch, that’s for sure!

This is all kinds of fascinating. It’s a Jerry Maguire-esque memo for Google. It’s The Burning Platform part 2.

First of all, it’s apparently a huge Google+ Circle fail. The engineer, Steve Yegge, meant to share it internally at Google and instead made it public. Whoops.

Second, while the meat of his post is about Amazon (where he previously worked), it’s all to set up how Google is going about things the wrong way. Yegge has no love for Amazon (and especially Jeff Bezos) anymore, but he’s clearly in awe of the platform they’ve created. (As well as Microsoft’s, Apple’s, and especially Facebook’s.)

Third, the most interesting aspect are Yegge’s thoughts on Google+ itself. He calls it a “knee-jerk reaction” and “a study in short-term thinking” — something which I mainly agree with.

Fourth, it’s not like Yegge’s post is a knee-jerk reaction by a new employee. He’s been with Google over 6 years.

Fifth, while the original post was taken down, it’s awesome that Google hasn’t completely killed it on Google+. All the reshares — like this one — are still live.
